 God Cares for You

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6–7)

Why is anxiety about the future a form of pride?

God’s answer would sound something like this (paraphrasing Isaiah 51:12):

I — the Lord, your Maker — I am he who comforts you, who promises to take care of you; and those who threaten you are mere men who die. So, your fear must mean that you do not trust me — and even though you are not sure that your own resources will take care of you, yet you opt for fragile self-reliance, rather than faith in my future grace. So, all your trembling — weak as it is — reveals pride.

The remedy? Turn from self-reliance to God-reliance, and put your faith in the all-sufficient power of the promise of his future grace.

You can see that anxiety is a form of pride in 1 Peter 5:6–7. Notice the grammatical connection between the verses. “Humble yourselves . . . under the mighty hand of God . . . [now, verse 7] casting all your anxieties on him.” Verse 7 is not a new sentence. It’s a subordinate clause. It starts with a participle: “Humble yourselves . . . [by] casting all your anxieties on him.”

This means that casting your anxieties on God is a way of humbling yourself under God’s mighty hand. It’s like saying, “Eat politely . . . chewing with your mouth shut.” Or, “Drive carefully . . . keeping your eyes on the road.” Or, “Be generous . . . inviting someone over on Thanksgiving.” Or, “Humble yourselves . . . casting your fears on God.”

One way to humble ourselves is to cast all our anxieties on God. Which means that one hindrance to casting your anxieties on God is pride. Which means that undue worry is a form of pride. No matter how weak it looks or feels.

Now, why is casting our anxieties on the Lord the opposite of pride? Because pride does not like to admit that it has any anxieties. Or that we can’t take care of them ourselves. And if pride has to admit that its fears are unmanagable, it still does not like to admit that the remedy might be trusting someone else who is wiser and stronger. 

In other words, pride is a form of unbelief and does not like to trust in God for his future grace. Faith, on the other hand, admits the need for help. Pride won’t. Faith banks on God to give help. Pride won’t. Faith casts anxieties on God. Pride won’t. 

Therefore, the way to battle the unbelief of pride is to admit freely that you have anxieties, and to cherish the promise of future grace in the words, “He cares for you.” And then unload your fears onto his strong shoulders.

SUBJECT : BECOMING HEIR OF RIGHTEOUSNESS!

Memory verse: ""By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith." (Hebrews 11 vs 7.)

READ: Romans 3 vs 21 - 26:

3:21: But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the law and the Prophets;

3:22: even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who before them that believe. For there is no difference,

3:23: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,

3:24: being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

3:25: whom God set forth to be a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

3:26: to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just, and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

INTIMATION:

An heir is one who obtains a lot or portion, especially of an inheritance; one who receives something other than by merit. It also denotes someone to whom something has been assigned by God. Therefore, “an heir of righteousness” denotes someone who inherited righteousness, or has righteousness assigned to him by God through faith in Him. 

Righteousness is the character or quality of being right or just. It was formerly spelled “rightwiseness,” which clearly expresses the meaning. It is used to denote the attribute of God; the “righteousness of God” means essentially the same as His faithfulness, or truthfulness; that which is consistent with His own nature and promises. 

The passage we read today expressed God’s faithfulness—righteousness—as exhibited in the Death of Jesus Christ, as a propitiation for our sins. God’s law established the penalty for sin as death. And all of us inherited sin from our first parents—Adam and Eve—deserving of the penalty of sin. Hence the Scripture noted, “for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3 vs 23). And the wages we owed for our sins is death (Romans 6 vs 23). 

God cannot deny Himself. The penalty of sin must be paid to show man that God is neither indifferent to sin nor regards it lightly. It also demonstrates that quality of God’s holiness which He expresses in His condemnation of sin. However, God showed His faithfulness—His righteousness—that is consistent with His nature as merciful, which was revealed by His gift of His only Son—Jesus Christ—as a propitiation for the sins all of the whole world.

From the beginning, we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both our parents and us) and proved that we are utterly incapable of having the glorious lives God wills for us. God, in His nature of being ever merciful, did it for us; out of sheer generosity He put us in right standing with Himself—giving us His own righteousness in Jesus Christ. This is a pure gift hence our being heirs of righteousness which is according to our faith in Him. He got us out of the mess we are in and restored us to where He always wanted us to be. And He did it by means of Jesus Christ His Son. 

God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear the world of sin. God decided on this course of action in full view of the public, to set the world in the clear with Himself through the sacrifice of Jesus, and finally taking care of the sins He had previously endured. Therefore, God sets things right by Himself, and also makes it possible for us to live in His rightness. Ordinarily, the position of being in right relationship with God wouldn’t be possible by our own works or acts of obedience. 

The apostle Paul in his epistles frequently uses ‘the righteousness of God,’ to express that gracious gift of God to men whereby all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are brought into right relationship with God. This righteousness is unattainable by obedience to any law, or by any merit of man’s own, or any other condition than that of faith in Christ. The man who trust in Christ becomes “the righteousness of God in Him.’: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (Second Corinthians 5 vs 21). God made us—the believers— to become in Christ all that God requires a man to be, all that he could never be in himself. 

Now, it is clear that the righteousness—the right action—that God demands from us is believe in His Word and all that Christ wrought for us in redemption. Consequently, because Abraham accepted the Word of God, making it his own by that act of his mind and spirit which is called faith, and, as he subsequently showed, submitting himself to its control, therefore, God accepted him as one who fulfilled the whole of His requirements: “For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.” (Romans 4 vs 3.) 

Righteousness is not said to be imputed to the believer save in the sense that faith is reckoned (imputed) for righteousness. For the Scripture says, “But to Him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.” (Romans 4 vs 5.) The faith thus exercised brings the soul into vital union with God in Christ, and inevitably produces righteousness of life, that is, conformity to the Will of God. Just as our memory verse recorded, Noah became an heir of righteousness because of His faith in God. My prayer is that you will believe in Christ and His substitutionary work for us, and have righteousness reckoned for you through faith in Christ Jesus and His work on the cross for the whole world.

Prayer: Abba Father, outside of You I am nothing and can do nothing. Thank You for the righteousness reckoned for me in Christ. In Him I live and move and have my being. May I never miss my heirship of righteousness, in Jesus’ Name I have prayed. Amen.

 Open the Windows of Your Heart

A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench. (Isaiah 42:3)

Probably the most encouraging words I have heard in weeks came from a prophecy in Isaiah 42:1–3 about how Jesus will use his spiritual power.

Do you feel like “a bruised reed” — like one of those big top-heavy Easter lilies whose stem has been squashed so that the flower flops to the ground and gets no sap? Do you ever feel like your faith is just a little spark instead of a flame — like that little red dot at the end of the wick after you blow out the birthday candle?

Take heart! The Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of encouragement: he will not snap off your flower; he will not snuff out your spark. 

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me . . . to proclaim good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). “The sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings” (Malachi 4:2). “[He is] gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29). “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14).

It may be a grief to us that we are only a spark instead of a flaming fire. But listen! And be encouraged: Yes, there is a big difference between a spark and a fire. But there is an infinite difference between a spark and no spark! A mustard seed of faith is infinitely closer to being a mountain of faith than it is to being no faith.

Open the window of God’s promises and let the Spirit blow into every room of your heart. The Holy Wind of God will not break or quench. He will lift up your head and fan your spark into a flame. SATURDAY MARCH 07, 2026.

SUBJECT: THE THIN LINE BETWEEN GRACE AND FAITH!

Memory verse: "Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” (John 11 vs 40.) 

READ: Mark 9 verse 23 - 29:

9:23: Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

9:24: Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief!”

9:25: When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!”

9:26: Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.”

9:27:But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

9:28: And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?

9:29: So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” 

INTIMATION:

There is a very thin line between grace and faith that is often missed by us. Because these two work together, the line between them is difficult for many to discern. And if we do miss it, our lives become confused. Many trust their faith to meet their needs. When their needs are not met, then they tried to have more faith because they are unable to discern the very fine line between faith and grace. They are not seeing beyond their faith to seek the grace of God (the power of God) to meet their needs.

Most people seemed to base all achievements on their faith, when, in reality, every victory or achievement is based on God's faithfulness bestowed on us by His grace—the power of God. If we frustrate the grace of God, we are going to feel frustrated. This explains why, by the grace of God, we receive our petition even when our faith is near zero.

In our memory verse, Jesus told Mary that it was only her faith (her believe) that would make her see the glory of a God (the power of God) raise the brother Lazarus from the dead. And this was the reason why Jesus said in Matthew 17 vs 21, "...if you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there," and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." It is not the tiny faith (as tiny as the tiniest seed on earth) that will move the mountain, but the mighty power of God (the grace of God) which came through your tiny faith to bring about the answer to the petition.

For instance, Jesus had faith (great faith I supposed) all the time He was suffering. He had faith while in the Garden of Gethsemane. He had faith before the high priest and Pilate. He had faith when He was being ridiculed, abused and mistreated. He had faith on the way to Golgotha. He had faith while hanging on the cross. He even had faith while His body lay in the tomb; He had absolute faith that God would not leave Him there but would raise Him up, as He had promised. 

At the point of completing His task, when God separated from Him, His faith was shaken hence His question, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" That is "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27 vs 46). That was an indication of His shaken faith. Consequently, Jesus called the Father 'My God,” instead of 'My Father' He had all through called Him before then. For all of Jesus’ faith, nothing happened until the power of God came forth to bring about the resurrection. His faith only kept Him stable until the Father's appointed time for His deliverance. We can have all the faith in the world, but it will avail us nothing until it is 'plugged into' the source of power, which is the grace of God. 

In order to get our needs met, in order to receive anything from the Lord, we must have both faith and grace. It is by grace through faith that we are saved. And it is by grace through faith that all our prayers are answered and all of our needs are met. Keep your eyes on God to deliver you, not your faith. In Second Timothy 2 vs 13, the Bible says, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself." The Bible is teaching us here to get our eyes off our ability to believe (as the ultimate), but rather on God's willingness to meet our needs even though we do not have perfect faith. 

In the passage we read today, the man asked Jesus for the healing of his son. Jesus told him that all things are possible to those who believe. The man replied, "Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief" or "Help my weakness of faith!" The man knew his faith was lacking, but he was honest about it, and Jesus healed his son. God's grace (power) came on the scene and gave the man what he did not deserve considering his faith—his believe. Jesus made it clear to His disciples that it’s not the faith or believe, but the power or grace of God, which can only be activated to deliver to us by prayer, or by prayer and fasting, in some cases. 

Prayer: Abba Father, You are ever faithful, even in my unfaithfulness, and Your steadfastness never seizes. Endue me with spirit of complete obedience and trust in You, casting all my cares upon You, knowing that there is nothing difficult nor beyond your power, in Jesus’ Name I have p rayed, Amen.

How Can I Be Filled with the Spirit?

 How Can I Be Filled with the Spirit?

Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Romans 15:4)

How can we be filled with the Holy Spirit? How can we experience an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our church and ourselves that fills us with indomitable joy and frees us, and empowers us, to love those around us in ways so authentic that they are won to Christ? 

Answer: Meditate day and night upon the incomparable, hope-giving promises of God. As Romans 15:4 shows us, that’s the way Paul kept his heart full of hope and joy and love. “Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” 

The full assurance of hope comes from meditating on the promises of God’s word. And this does not contradict the sentence nine verses later that says that the Holy Spirit gives us hope (Romans 15:13). This is because the Holy Spirit is the divine author of Scripture. His word is the means of his work. It is no contradiction that the way he fills us with hope is by filling us with his own word of promise. 

Hope is not some vague emotion that comes out of nowhere, like a stomachache. Hope is the confidence that the stupendous future promised to us by the word of the Spirit is going to really come true. Therefore, the way to be filled with the Spirit is to be filled with his word. The way to have the power of the Spirit is to believe the promises of his word. 

For it is the word of promise that fills us with hope, and hope fills us with joy, and joy overflows in the power and freedom to love our neighbor. And that is the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

SUBJECT : BE PATIENT WITH GOD!

Memory verse: "For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, it will not tarry." (Habakuk 2 vs 3.)

READ: Romans 4 vs 16 - 22:

4:16: Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

4:17: (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which be not as though they did; 

4:18: who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”

4:19: And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb

4:20: He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 

4:21: and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

4:22: And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

INTIMATION:

It is pertinent to wait to receive from God after you have presented your petition in prayers to Him. Our memory verse is the answer God gave prophet Habakkuk. God's answer to Habakkuk is the same answer He would give us; 'Be patient! I will work out My plans in My perfect timing.' It isn't easy to be patient, but to trust God fully means to trust Him even when we don't understand why events occur as they do. Everything has its timing before God. Your duty is to wait, for surely, if it is His Will, it must surely come.

The passage we read today is a graphic illustration of what the apostle Paul said about Abraham’s attitude when the promise was delayed. The 18th and 19th verses say, "Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be.” And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb."

God made a promise to Abraham to bless him and make him a great nation when he was seventy five years old, and the wife about sixty five years old. The promise of a child from the wife Sarah didn't come until he was a hundred years old, and the wife ninety years old. At that age Abraham was already weak in his body. It is very likely he may not have been having erection again. Again, at ninety years the wife's womb was considered dead. In all these circumstances, Abraham didn't shake in his believe of the promise of God—the Word of God.

Abraham believed in the Lord, and He counted it to him for righteousness. He hoped that God will make good His promises in the future. Hope is always in the future. It takes your faith, which is now, to hope for the future occurrence of the promise. Abraham hoped for a son, faith takes the place of hope. When the promise or answer is delayed, you wait in hope and by faith, knowing that He who promised is faithful and will do it. He is the same God that calls those things which do not exist as though they did, and they become. He is the same God who looked into the empty dark space and said, "Let there be light, and there was light."

Now, looking at verse 19, our senses will consider strongly the state of Abraham and the wife—100 and 90 years old respectively. But the angel had spoken from God, therefore, Abraham, looking to the promise of God, "He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He has promised He was also able to perform (verse 20 - 21).

That should be our attitude of believers in such circumstances. Our faith should be that God would give us anything that He had promised, and our petition would be delivered to us as Abraham's son was born to him. You take God at His Word, and your heart overflows with joy that He has given you His Word. The thing for which you have prayed simply is as He promised. You have called into being a thing that was not because His Word had given you the assurance of it. And you have been assured of receiving because He said, "I watch over My Word to perform it." (Jeremiah 1 vs 12.)

What then do you do while waiting? Let us look at Philippians 4 vs 6, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." You have done the praying. The requests have been made known. Now with thankful quietness you wait. Someone might say, "But your prayer is not answered, the fever is still there, the bill is still unpaid." You drive the vultures (discouragers) away as Abraham did on his sacrifice. You refuse them to alight upon the Word and destroy it. Anxiety is one of the destroyers, so avoid it. It can make you question God, and murmur against Him (Another set of destroyers).

In all of these, patiently wait for God to come through to you. Just as David did, and expressed in Psalm 40 vs 1; "(...I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry." Therefore, "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for He is faithful that promised." (Hebrews 10 vs 23.) 

Prayer: Abba Father, endue me with the Spirit of complete rest and trust in You, that I may not waver at Your promises through unbelief, at anytime and in anything, knowing that You are God and never changes, in Jesus’ Name I h ave prayed. Amen.

 God Regards the Lowly

“The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (Deuteronomy 33:27)

You may be going through things right now that are painfully preparing you for some precious service to Jesus and to his people. When a person strikes rock bottom with a sense of nothingness or helplessness, he may find that he has struck the Rock of Ages. 

I remember a delicious sentence from Psalm 138:6 that our family read at our breakfast devotions: “Though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly.” 

You cannot sink so low in despairing of your own resources that God does not see and care. In fact, he is at the bottom waiting to catch you. As Moses says, “The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27).

Yes, he sees you trembling and slipping. He could (and often did) grab you before you hit bottom. But this time he has some new lessons to teach. 

The psalmist said in Psalm 119:71, “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.” He does not say it was easy or fun or pleasant. In retrospect, he simply says, “It was good for me.”

Last week I was reading a book by a Scottish minister named James Stewart. He said, “In love’s service, only the wounded soldiers can serve.” That’s why I believe some of you are being prepared right now for some precious service of love. Because you are being wounded.

Do not think that your wound has come to you apart from God’s gracious design. Remember his word: “See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me . . . I wound and I heal” (Deuteronomy 32:39).

May God grant a special grace to you who are groaning under some burden. Look eagerly for the new tenderness of love that God is imparting to you even now.
