SUBJECT: OCCUPY TILL I COME!

Memory verse: "So he called ten of his servants, and delivered to them ten pounds and said to them, "Occupy till I come." (Luke 19 vs 13.) 

READ: Luke 19 vs 11 - 13:

19:11: Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately.

19:12: Therefore He said, "A certain nobleman went to a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.

19:13: So he called ten of his servants, and delivered to them ten pounds and said to them, 'Occupy till I come.'

INTIMATION:

Jesus' parable in the passage we read today is about a nobleman who goes to a far country to get a kingdom and returns. Before leaving, he gave each of his ten servants a pound (a mina) and told them to trade with it until he comes back. When he returned, he rewarded the servants who doubled or multiplied their pound. He scolded the one servant who was afraid, hid his coin in a cloth, and did nothing.

The phrase "occupy till I come" in the Scriptures means to stay busy doing God's work, investing your time, talents, and resources to advance His kingdom until Jesus returns. The command is translated more directly as "do business until I come" or "put this money to work. The original Greek word means to do business, trade, or put money to work.

 

This parable is talking about the importance between the first coming and the Second Coming of Jesus. There is a huge gap between the two events. There have already been 2,000 years of the church age, during which we need to occupy and be busy about the Lord’s business until He comes back.

The story showed Jesus' followers what they were to do during the time between Jesus' departure and His second coming. Because we live in that time period, it applies directly to us. We have been given excellent resources to build and expand God's kingdom. Jesus means that believers should actively work, serve, and multiply the spiritual and physical resources God gave them until He returns, rather than sitting around and waiting passively.

Christians should not just stand still or stare at the skies waiting for the end times. They have work to do. Use the gifts God gives to them for the purpose of growing His kingdom. God gives every person time, talents, money, and opportunities. We need to take the time, treasures and talents God has given us right now and spread the Gospel. We are to occupy until the Lord returns in His Second Advent or Second Coming.

Jesus excepts us to use these talents so that they multiply and the kingdom grows. He will ask each of us to account for what we do with his gifts. Instead of sitting idly and waiting passively for the end times, believers are told to stay actively productive and useful. It is a call to maintain moral purpose, share the gospel, and serve others with steadfast commitment. While awaiting the coming of the kingdom of God in glory, we must do Christ's work. Keep working faithfully so you will be ready when the master comes back.

Why was the king so hard on this man who had not increased the money? He punished the man because (1) he didn't share his master's interest in the kingdom, (2) he didn't trust his master's intentions, (3) his only concern was for himself, and (4) he did nothing to use the money. Like the king in this story, God has given you gifts to use for the benefit of His kingdom. Do you want the kingdom to grow? Do you trust God to govern it fairly? Are you as concerned for others' welfare as you are for your own? Are you willing to use faithfully what he has entrusted to you? 

Jesus will return just as the king, and He expects to see returns on the investments and gifts He entrusted to His people. He will commend the fruitful belivers and condemn the unfruitful ones. Therefore, the ball is in our courts to showcase what we have achieved while He was away and except our rewards which is with Him to give to everyone according to our works have been.

Prayers: Abba Father, endue me with strength, wisdom, diligence, and commitment to remain actively engaged in the works of advancing Your kingdom as a lifestyle until Your return, in Jesus' Name I have prayed. Amen.
